can someone explain why the fuck i have to search for helvetica instead of it being standard? what is this bullshit sorcery?

It’s because Microsoft developed Arial as a Helvetica look-alike that they wouldn’t have to pay…

But I’d hardly say in the days where digital rescaling is easy as heck that it’s not actually that hard to do anymore it’s applicable to charge thousands for a font :|

A real type designer does not just rescale a font using a computer, such things are unsuitable 99% of the time as it would not take into account inkwells, scaling, x-heights, etc. In practically all cases, different type weights are all made from scratch.

That means redrawing - usually by hand, and later digitally - the same 50 to several hundred characters for every weight (ultra light, thin, light, roman/regular, medium, bold, heavy, black) and variation (ultra condensed to ultra expanded, and any number of iterations in-between)… and then you have to do it in italics too.

The world of typography is a deep and long-running one, and very few people actually have the specialised skills to create an amazing typeface.
